Overview

As many end-users transition to hydrogen firing for steam generation, it’s crucial to address the challenges involved in converting or adding this fuel to your existing system. Most steam plants are designed for natural gas, but hydrogen has distinct combustion characteristics that require specific adjustments:

  • Faster Flame Speed: Hydrogen's flame speed is approximately 9 times faster than natural gas, necessitating redesigned burners and gas nozzles to manage the higher fuel velocity safely and effectively.

  • Higher Flame Temperature: Hydrogen combustion results in a 450°F higher flame temperature than natural gas. This calls for upgrading internal burner components to higher-grade steel or alloys that can handle the increased heat.

  • NOx Emissions: Due to the hotter flame and faster combustion rate, hydrogen firing can result in higher levels of thermal NOx emissions. To counteract this, techniques such as Flue Gas Recirculation (FGR), steam injection, and Ultra-low NOx burners can be implemented to maintain emissions within required limits.

A Complete, Safe, and Efficient Solution

Our Preferred Special Combustion Engineering (PSCE) division has successfully developed hydrogen burner systems that consider all these factors. These systems are designed to ensure your boiler plant operates efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally sound manner. We provide a site-specific solution that integrates with upstream and downstream processes for a complete, reliable combustion system.

With our expertise in alternative and green fuels, we are committed to delivering reliable combustion, maximizing operational uptime, and ensuring the efficient use of clean energy sources.
